VOLUME UNPUBLISHED / Time Construction 2
Kunsthalle Bern 2002
For the duration of the exhibition, ceiling panels intended for installation in a burnt-down sports hall were "temporarily stored" in the exhibition space. After negotiations with the people responsible for the building project, they took the route from their production site in Holland to the Kunsthalle for the time being, only to reach their destination after the exhibition and be installed there as planned as ceiling elements. - An attempt to "measure" the volume of the entrance hall with the volume of this future ceiling.
"Michel Foucault postulated in the short text "Other Spaces", written for architects, that in the second half of the 20th century the temporal and history were no longer in the foreground, but that the "epoch of space" now dominated: "We are in the epoch of the simultaneous, we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, in the epoch of the near and the far, of juxtaposition, of divergence. We are, I believe, at a moment when the world experiences itself less as one big evolving life through time, but rather as a web that connects its dots and crosses its tangles. (...) Nowadays, storage takes the place of the extension that had replaced the localities. Storage or placement is defined by the neighbourhood relations between points or elements; formally, it can be described as rows, trees, grids." Exactly these characteristics and motifs - juxtaposition, storage, placement, row, grid - also characterise the work VOLUMEN / Unpublished by Ilona Ruegg." Bernard Fibicher in catalogue text
